Gladstone Investment makes combined equity and debt investments in established private businesses in the U.S., in connection with buyouts or other recapitalizations of those companies. Equity investments primarily take the form of preferred or common equity (on occasion including warrants or options to acquire the foregoing). Debt investments are primarily any of senior term loans, senior subordinated loans and junior subordinated loans. Gladstone Investment's individual investments typically total up to $75 million, although investment size may vary. Gladstone Investment intends that the investment portfolio over time will consist of approximately 75% in debt securities and 25% in equity securities, at cost.
Given our approach to the combined equity and debt investments, our investment objectives are (a) to achieve and grow current income through investment in the debt securities of our portfolio companies that make interest payments on our outstanding indebtedness and facilitate distributions to stockholders that we anticipate will grow over time and (b) to provide our stockholders with long-term capital appreciation through the value of our equity investments which we anticipate will appreciate over time and be sold for capital gains.
We have three affiliate investment companies. Gladstone Commercial Corporation is a real estate investment trust that owns net leased industrial, commercial and retail property and selectively makes long-term industrial and commercial mortgage loans. Gladstone Capital Corporation is a BDC that also invests in small and medium sized private businesses in the U.S., historically as a debt fund. Gladstone Land Corporation is a real estate investment trust that invests in farmland located in major agricultural markets in the U.S.
